Over the past year, we’ve seen quite a few mid rangers that are great value propositions, but didn’t get as much airtime. So in this review, I’m going to shout out 5 of these earbuds.

Just to be clear, if I didn’t mention a particular product which you think should be on this list, it doesn’t mean I don’t like it or that it’s bad, it just means these five made a bigger impression on me.

Nothing ear 2024

These earbuds look iconic and have impressive sound quality. They feature decent noise cancelling and very flexible options for tuning their sound including both automatic and manual tuning. But more importantly, they’ve got one of the best mic pickups. For the price you’re paying, it’s packed with all the specs and features you need, making it a great all rounder in the midrange for iOS or Android devices.

Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2024

They’re a huge step forward from the older Bose earbuds. They’ve got most of the features people have been requesting from Bose, and even going beyond that, like having their own voice control system.

These earbuds are also one of the best noise cancelling earbuds in the market. (Seriously, I can’t think of any other option in the midrange that could rival the QuietComforts in terms of noise cancelling.) So if this is what you need, definitely go for the Bose.

That being said, it doesn’t have swipe controls, and in terms of aesthetics and build quality, they don’t feel as premium. Still, they deserve to be on this list for having the best noise cancelling.

JLab Epic Lab

These are buds that are often not on people’s radar, but they are one of the best sounding earbuds in the market under $200. They have a Dual driver design that provides a relaxed, open and clean sound, much like the B&W Pi7 S2 which are very expensive earbuds. On top of that, the JLab even comes with a dongle which streams audio over Opus, meant for low latency connection.

Although I have some issues with its user interface, go for the JLab Epic Lab if you want premium tier sound in the midrange bracket.

Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro

The Liberty 4 Pros are one of the best midrange buds available, and it isn’t because of that screen on the case, because some people like it, and some people don’t.

What makes these midrange buds great is because they’re the full package. They sound good, have great noise cancelling, decent mic pickup, seamless multipoint, and a whole range of very useful features. Some of which were inspired by premium earbuds from Apple and Sony.

Soundcore earbuds are also popular for being highly customisable in terms of sound. You can customise their sound to your liking either manually, or automatically with HearID. Which approach is preferable is entirely up to you, and this flexibility is why the Soundcores are so compelling in the midrange.

AirPods 4 ANC

I was thinking hard about whether to include the AirPods 4 ANC on this list because personally, I’m not a fan of open fit earbuds. I prefer buds that stay snug and secure, and these don’t provide that. But in the end, I am including them among the best mid-range earbuds, not only because they’re so tiny, but because their active noise cancelling is pure sorcery.

It’s not as powerful as the pro model, but it’s close. In fact, I’d even argue that it’s more constant than the Pro, because it doesn’t depend on noise isolation at all.

In some ways, it also sounds better than the Pro because of the smoother vocals. So you’re getting smoother vocals and great noise canceling on top of most of the benefits that come with AirPods on Apple devices - like seamless switching and Adaptive Mode.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 3

Finally, we've got the Huawei Freebuds Pro 3. This is an easy choice because it sounds great, has great noise cancelling and most importantly, it's got the industry's best mic pickup. Whether you're in a quiet room or a noisy place, your voice is gonna sound just as clear and the background will be total silence. It's that good.

👉 Have a listen to the mic pickup sample.

That is why it's so easy to recommend the Huawei Freebuds Pro 3 in the mid-range. However, if you're on an Android device, setting them up might be a little frustrating at first, as the Huawei AI Life app, which manages the Freebuds Pro 3, isn’t available on the Google Play Store. Rather, you have to download an installer to get the AI Life app running.

But once you've gotten that app installed, you can access the Freebuds Pro 3's features just as much on Android as on iOS. Of course, full features will be unlocked if you are using a Huawei device with the Freebuds Pro 3.

So those are my choices for the best mid-range earbuds. Of course, this list is not exhaustive, and many others also deserve a mention, but off the top of my head, these are the ones I’m most impressed by in the past year.
