New AirPods Pro 2 Firmware 5E133 IMPROVES sound quality... 😲

(03 May 2023 Update: Firmware 5E135 is out! Read about it here.)

In this article we’re going to see if the AirPods Pro 2’s new firmware 5E133 affected its key performance metrics such as its sound, its noise cancelling, and call quality.

Sound Quality changes?

In terms of sound quality changes, it does seem like the new firmware 5E133 has an impact on its sound. The basic tuning is quite similar, as you can see in this frequency response chart. But it’s a bit more v-shaped now. There’s now more emphasis on bass, the upper mids and the treble, which gives its sound more gravity in the lows, crispiness in the vocals, and airiness in the high frequencies so that its sound staging feels more open. And I feel that this tuning lends itself very well to spatial audio. So if you like watching movies on Apple Tv, it’s going to sound more like an actual home theater setup in your ears. This is something that you can actually hear from the these binaural sound samples comparing the AirPods Pro 2’s new firmware to its previous firmware.

Active Noise Canceling changes?

In terms of active noise cancelling, when tested under simulated cafe style background noise, it seems that there is less hiss in the noise canceling, while being as effective as before. And to me, that is an improvement. Listen to the samples by clicking on this link.

Call Quality changes?

The update also did not have an effect on its call quality. There’s been no change at all to the clarity of my voice in quiet conditions, nor its noise-gating algorithms in noisy conditions. Listen to the samples by clicking on this link.

Conclusions

Overall, in terms of how the new firmware affected the AirPods Pro 2’s performance, it seems like its sound quality is better now, with little to no impact at all on its noise canceling or call quality. But what do you think? Have you experienced any issues with this new update? Let me know in the comments.

How to update?

Some of you may not have been able to get your AirPods Pro 2 to update, and as far as I know, there really is no way to force the update.

How I did the update was:

1. I connected the buds to my phone,

2. played a couple of songs (maybe an album),

3. put the buds back into the case to charge,

4. wait for a while, connect it back to my phone,

5. see if the update’s been performed.

First couple of times I tried that it did not update, but the third time, it worked. That’s how I updated it to 5E133.

And like I said, if you want to keep track of any changes to the AirPods Pro 2’s performance as it receives future firmware updates, subscribe right now and tap that bell button to stay notified.
