New Sony WF-1000XM4 2.0.1 Firmware solved a problem... 🤔
Hey guys. We have a new firmware for the Sony WF-1000XM4 dubbed 2.0.1. According to the update notes, its sole purpose is to correct a Speak-to-Chat glitch that doesn’t resume playing music when it’s activated.
Speak-to-Chat is a feature which automatically turns off ambient passthrough when you talk, so that you can have conversations with people without manually turning on transparency. I personally don’t use Speak-to-Chat often, so I tested this feature before updating the buds, but I could not replicate the issue.
Hence, this could only be an issue with a fringe number of XM4s. (If you had this issue and the update fixed it, let me know in the comments.)
This video is all about whether the update affected any of the XM4’s core performance such as its sound, noise canceling and call quality.
Call Quality
No changes at all in terms of mic pickup. This means no improvements in both quiet or noisy conditions in terms of call quality. Listen to the samples here.
Active Noise Canceling
In terms of active noise cancelling there seems to be a small change. It seems to be a little more quiet in the mid-range frequencies, which affects the loudness of human chatter. But in terms of absolute decibels there does not seem to be a change at all. Listen to the samples here.
Sound Quality
In terms of sound quality, frequency sweeps before and after the update show that there are no significant changes to its sound, as you can hear in the following sound samples.
Overall, this update does not have much of an impact on the XM4’s key performance metrics. I’ll continue to monitor it in case there are any changes to its battery performance, but so far, things seem to be okay on that front.
