Sony WH-1000XM6 AND WF-1000XM6 Launching In July? 😯

The Sony WH-1000XM6 has finally been filed with the FCC under the code YY2984, and it includes some very interesting details regarding its design, Bluetooth specs, and potential release date, which I’m going to get into. First a big shoutout to my friend thewalkmanblog for breaking this story.

Now, note that what we’re seeing here in the label document is described as an engineering prototype, so it’s not the final design. Nonetheless, it’s interesting that the cushions are depicted as attaching to the chassis with just two short poles, and one bracket on top while the XM5 has 6 brackets. This is why I think the XM6 will have magnetically attached cushions at least at the bottom where the label is to secure it. The top part will still be secured with a bracket claw system.

The earcups also look a little different, resembling the XM4 a little more than the XM5. And if I may comment on the hinge system, they seem to be returning to a variation of the XM4’s hinge system, while retaining the XM5’s slim headband. This leads me to believe the XM6 headphones will bring back foldable earcups.

That being said, based on the image, the driver size could be a similar 30mm type as the XM5 headphones.

As for release date, we don’t have a sure date as of this moment. However, YY2964’s short term confidentiality date is listed as July 22 2025. That is when all details of the product will be made public on FCC’s website so it could be launched on 22 July or earlier. Interestingly, this timing is later than usual, considering the XM5 headphones were launched in May of 2022, not in July.

But do you know what was launched in July of 2023? The WF-1000XM5 earbuds. And if we go by Sony’s typical 2 year release cycle, the XM5 earbuds are due for a refresh this year. So from my point of view, the XM6 headphones and earbuds could be launched together this July. If that’s true, I’m going to be SO busy in July and have ZERO social life.

Other details include the fact that it’s made in Malaysia, along with some Bluetooth specs, also some engineering details which you can find out more in thewalkmanblog’s report.
