Bowers & Wilkins updates Pi5 & Pi7
By Shawn Chung - Singapore
Bowers & Wilkins launched their first ANC true wireless earbuds, the Pi7 and Pi5, back in 2021, and true to the brand’s premium audio DNA, they looked posh and sounded great, though many reviews pegged them for frequent drop outs, especially in congested wireless environments like train stations, basic ANC and battery performance.
The UK brand has now returned with an update to both earbuds, which are designated Pi7 S2 and Pi5 S2 (we assume the S2 means ‘Series 2’). Both new models use Bluetooth 5.0 and gain an additional hour of charge for the earbuds, lasting up to 5 hours per charge, and a fast charging feature where 15 minutes charging gets you 2 hours playback.
A B&W spokesperson informed WhatHiFi that with the new earbuds, the company improved Bluetooth reception by repositioning the antennas within the endcap of each earbuds, as well as sourcing a new material for better signal transparency.
Pi5 S2
The more affordable Pi5 S2 comes in three colors, Storm Grey, Cloud Grey and Spring Lilac, and features a large 9.2mm dynamic driver for excellent sound reproduction. Supported Bluetooth codes include aptX, AAC and SBC, while other features include ANC, dual microphones (per earbud), and a wireless charging case with 19 hours of battery life.
Pi7 S2
B&W’s flagship Pi7 S2 now comes in three elegant colorways - Midnight Blue, Satin Black and Canvas White, while boasting superior sound thanks to using 9.2mm dynamic drivers with balanced armatures, backed by aptX Adaptive for true 24-bit connection for high-resolution audio, while three microphones per earbud and ANC ensure your calls are crystal-clear.
LIke its predecessor, the Pi7 S2 has a unique retransmission feature - simply attach the charging case to an external audio source such as a tablet, PC, TV or in-flight entertainment system via USB-C, and it automatically connects.
