iPhone 14 Pro: Does Crash Detection Work?
by Shawn Chung - Singapore
Popular YouTube channel TechRax is well known for testing consumer electronic products to destruction, such as dropping a PS5 down a flight of stairs or dropping an iPhone 13 into a 1,600 feet (480 meter) deep lake.
In the latest TechRax video, the channel actually tried to answer a question that many Apple iPhone 14 customers will have on their minds - “Is Apple’s Crash Detection a marketing gimmick, or does it really work?”
In this video, the TechRax team macgyvered a remote controlled car to drive into a scrap car with an iPhone 14 Pro taped to the drivers headrest.
As you can see, in the first attempt, the car inadvertently had a minor front fender bender collision, and the iPhone 14 Pro did not activate, which is probably because the device detected the collision was below its parameters.
Subsequent harder impacts did activate the Emergency SOS feature, thought the TechRax team stopped the device before it could make a real emergency call.
I have set off my Apple Watch’s Fall Detection during a bicycle accident, so I do find the emergency features that Apple incorporates into the Watch and iPhone to offer me a peace of mind when an accident happens, though I’m still curious about how Apple’s emergency response service works.
