Should you wait for AirPods Pro 2? 🤔
Rumors are flying that the AirPods Pro 2 is going to be launched on 7 September during Apple’s Far Out event. If all the leaks and rumors hold any water, the new AirPods Pro will look basically the same as the 2019 model but will introduce new features like a more powerful H2 chip, capable of upgraded noise cancelling, streaming lossless audio and supporting the LC3 codec, watch this video if you wanna know more about what LC3 does.
Rumors from 52audio suggest that it could also introduce new sensors that improves wear detection, and fitness tracking features, although I think that one’s a little more unlikely. If there are any new fitness tracking magic it’s probably going to go to the latest Beats earbuds. What’s more interesting is the changes to the case. It’s projected to have IPX4 water resistance just like the AirPods 3rd Gen. And the most recent leaked CAD renders of the case from Andrew O’Hara’s Twitter revealed a possible lanyard loop, and some holes what weren’t on the first-gen AirPods Pro. There are no details about what these holes are for, but it’s entirely possible that this mirrors the holes at the bottom of the iPhone. - which makes them ports for a microphone and a speaker.
The speaker could simply be for “Find My”. If you misplace your Pro 2s you could find it by getting the case to play a chime instead of the earbuds. If the other hole is for a microphone, it could be for improving call quality by picking up more data about ambient noise.
This will seem to indicate that even when the AirPods is out of the case, some sort of connection will be maintained with the case. Is it possible that the case will play a bigger role in terms of sharing audio or sound quality? That remains to be seen but I think giving the case a bigger role is a big brain move if that all turns out to be true.
But there are also rumors that the AirPods Pro 2 is going to be more expensive than the current gen AirPods Pro, and that the current-gen AirPods Pro will be sunsetted, which means they won’t be sold concurrently. We don’t have an exact figure but if true, that is going to put a ding in its shiny facade. Subscribe to the main channel for my review of the AirPods Pro 2 when it comes out.
