Sony WF-1000XM5 is coming soon! 😱 (I was wrong...)

I was wrong! A couple of months ago I said that Sony’s FCC filing dubbed YY2968 could be the WF-1000XM5 earbuds, and that it could be released in May as per its confidential info release date. But the guy behind thewalkmanblog himself reached out to me, that in fact that is not the XM5. Rather, it should be a follow up to the WF-C500.

Now we have a new Sony FCC filing, this one’s dubbed YY2963, which even thewalkmanblog says it’s possible that this is the WF-1000XM5 that we’re looking at. It’s got a short term confidentiality date of 22 August 2023, which means that the release of the product itself could occur on this date, or earlier.

The ‘short term confidentiality date’ is only indicative because there have been instances when the actual release date of the product was brought forward. For example, the WF-1000XM4 had a short term confidentiality date of somewhere in September, but the actual release was brought forward to the 8th of June. So the ‘short term confidentiality date’ is only indicative, and the WF-1000XM5 could very well be released earlier than that.

Some other info we can glean from this filing is that the WF-1000XM5 supports Bluetooth 5.3 due to the bandwidth of the Bluetooth modules, and that the case of the XM5 could have a more angular, squarish shape compared to the WF-1000XM4.

This drawing could be to throw off speculation about the XM5’s true design, so it’s entirely possible that its case could look entirely different from what we’re seeing here.

But if we were to speculate, I think the size of the WF-1000XM5 could be a little bigger than the previous model, the XM4. The reason for that is the battery. For the XM5, they may want to maintain a similar battery life compared to the XM4, while extending the XM5’s battery’s lifespan. Take the LinkBuds S as an example.

Recently there was a firmware update that reduces the battery life of the LinkBuds S to get more charging cycles out of that same battery. So they could have put in that same limitation on the WF-1000XM5. And to offset that limitation, they may put in batteries that are bigger in size, with bigger capacities. So that we can still get that similar 8 hours in the buds and up to 24 hours with the case, without the long term issues that we’ve seen on the XM4’s battery, especially the first batches of the XM4.

What long term issues am I talking about? Watch this series to find out.

As we approach closer to August, if there is any new information about the WF-1000XM5, my subscribers will be among the first to know, so do get subscribed to the channel, and tap the bell button to stay notified.
