When you’re buying earbuds there are so many factors to consider, and it can be a complicated process since there really is no one product in the market that’s perfect at everything. But thank God you found this article, because I’m going to tell you what are the best earbuds in 2023. So based on what’s important, you can narrow down what your choices are, and decide what to get. The earbuds with the best phone call quality in 2023 is…
Best Call Quality - Nothing Ear (2)
I’ve tested them in a noisy food court and these have the best voice pickup with exceptional background noise reduction of other people’s voices compared to other earbuds. In a controlled environment filled with droning, low frequency noise, last year’s winner the Sony LinkBuds S performs great, which is awesome for things like making phone calls on a train, on a bus. But it wasn’t able to pick up my voice very well if there are actually people around me talking, with constant, conflicting background chatter. So if you are looking to cancel human chatter in a variety of situations, you cannot go wrong with the Nothing Ear (2).

Best ANC - Bose QC II Earbuds
The buds with the best Active Noise Canceling in 2023 is the Bose QC II earbuds. I love these for noise canceling. It’s a great all rounder whether it be for the cafe, the train, the plane… As I’ve said in my vlog, these are my go-to for plane flights because no other earbuds out there cancel plane noise as well as the Bose QC II. And when there are babies crying these will even take the edge off of that. Although its case could be smaller, these are highly recommended for active noise canceling.

It’s also great for the gym!
Interesting fact. I do also use the QC IIs for the gym. It’s very effective against gym noise, like gym music, and the clinking and clanging of the machines behind me. They are also comfortable, and have incredible stability thanks to their uniquely designed eartips. So if you’re looking for some great gym earbuds, the Bose QC IIs are fantastic for that.
Best Transparency - AirPods Pro 2
The buds with the best transparency in 2023 is the AirPods Pro 2. It’s so good that I benchmark every TWS earbuds to the AirPods Pro 2 when it comes to ambient passthrough. True transparency for me has to feel like you’re not wearing earbuds at all when you turn this feature on, and the only one that’s able to do that for me is the AirPods Pro 2. There are others that are pretty close, especially buds from Sony and Bose, but none as transparent as Apple’s best earbuds.

Now we’ve come to the best part, and probably the most controversial.
Best Sound Quality - B&W Pi7 S2
The buds with the best sound quality in 2023 is (in my opinion) the B&W Pi7 S2. It’s just the way it’s tuned. I like how smooth and non-fatiguing it sounds when listening to hiphop, synthwave, R&B, even my podcasts. It’s got great dynamic range, vocals sound smooth, prominent, and well separated. Versatile bass response as well, as in it can sound clean, punchy and vibrant, or heavy and resonant depending on the music that i’m playing. I’m not saying that it’s going to sound fantastic for everybody, sound is a very personal thing. But to my tastes, it is a smoother sound compared to what I’m used to, from brands like Sony, Bose and Apple. And to me that tastes delicious.
The issue I have with the Pi7 S2 is that it doesn’t have its own sound presets or graphic EQ for you to tweak the audio to your liking. But out of the box, this is easily one of the best, if not the best sounding TWS in 2023.

So those are 2023’s best earbuds in their various categories, and I use them from time to time depending on the situation. Like, if I go flying on a plane, I take the Bose. But what are my daily drivers? In other words, which are the ones I automatically reach for without thinking, every single day?
Beat All-Rounder - Sony LinkBuds S
Those may not have to be the best at everything, but I find that this pair is a great all rounder. Probably about 80-90% as good as the best earbuds in all the different categories like sound, active noise canceling, transparency.
And the one that I often reach for is the Sony LinkBuds S.
They’re a great all rounder, plus these are some of the smallest earbuds you can buy in 2023, which makes them easy to just grab and go.
One thing they aren’t as good as the others is the controls. For example, if you want volume controls on one earbud, you have to give up something like ANC toggles or Playback controls. You can’t do everything at once. And this is definitely something that Sony earbuds in general can do a lot better. Check out my full review of the LinkBuds S.
