NEW AirPods Pro 2 Firmware 6F8 FIXED a Problem... πŸ€”

The latest firmware update for the AirPods Pro 2 is dubbed 6F8, replacing 6F7 on both the USB-C and Lightning connector versions. While the firmware notes only state that it’s for bug fixes and improvements, Apple has revealed that 6F8 addresses a vulnerability allowing an attacker within Bluetooth range to spoof the source device and gain access to your headphones. This security boost is good, but does 6F8 also change anything relating to performance?

AirPods Pro 2 Firmware 6F8 Review

Microphone Quality Changes?

For the USB-C version, there is no change in microphone quality in either quiet or noisy, windy conditions. However, the Lightning version seems slightly slower this time in reacting to background noise, but when it did, it sounded just like 6F7’s mic pickup.

Active Noise Canceling Changes?

In terms of active noise canceling, there doesn’t seem to be any significant changes. The change in pitch may result from differences in how the earbuds are coupled to the microphone, but the decibel meter shows there is no difference. It seems to cancel as much noise as before.

Sound Quality

In terms of sound quality, frequency sweeps show it is largely unaffected. The Lightning version of firmware 6F8 looks exactly like 6F7, so it will sound identical. On the USB-C version there is a bit of variance in the upper mids from 1.7KHz but comparing their recordings, this difference is not noticeable to me, and likely not to most people too. Conclusion

It seems that firmware 6F8 mainly focuses on patching a security hole and without affecting the AirPods Pro’s sound quality, noise canceling, nor mic pickup, except for the Lightning version reacting to noise slightly slower in this test.
