Pixel Buds Pro 2 - My thoughts 🤔
Google just announce a whole new range of Pixel devices, but the spotlight today is on the Pixel Buds Pro 2. Want to know what's new about it, what are performance predictions and the one thing Google didn’t include?
By and large, the design isn’t radically different, but it does have some important upgrades. For those of us who struggled with the fit of the previous model, the new version now include stability fins that locks the buds in place, ensuring they don’t fall out as easily. The buds are also smaller, and according to Google, they should fit more snugly in your ears.
Furthermore, the most important internal upgrade is the new Tensor A1 chip. The chip is not only more advanced but also more power efficient, helping to extend battery. Google claims it enables noise cancelling to be twice as good as the previous model and powers Silent Seal 2.0, which adapts to a wider range of noises from low to high frequencies. Personally, I think it’s plausible, but it will likely depend on how well the buds fit and seal in your ears.
Aside from power efficient and noise cancelling, the Tensor A1 chip also powers conversation detection. This is the Google equivalent to Sony’s Speak-to-Chat and Apple’s Conversation Awareness. The mics will listen for your voice, and using AI, they detect when you speaking and switch to transparency so you can have a conversation without removing your earbuds. Once you stop speaking, they switch back to noise cancelling.
Speaking of mics, the previous Pixel Buds Pro already had impressive mic pickup with fantastic noise gating and great voice clarity, even in noisy places.
Google claims the Gen 2 has IMPROVED mic pickup ON TOP of that, with new algorithms that reduce noise in even more settings. If that is true, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 could very well lead the industry in terms of crystal clear phone calls.
Based on Google’s saying, the Pixel Buds Pro 2’s upgrades seem meaningful. However, one potential drawback is that it still does not have full iOS support. You can definitely connect them to iPhones and iPads, but you won’t be able to access all of its features, settings, and firmware updates. Unless you are using Pixel device or the Google Pixel Buds app on Android.
Another potential issue is the price. It is more expensive than the previous model at launch, which could give people some pause. This key question is ‘are the upgrades substantial enough to pay more?’ Based on what Google’s saying, I would say maybe. I’ll need to thoroughly test them to help you make a more informed purchase decision. As mentioned earlier, that review is coming as soon as I get them. Stay tuned!
