Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless Could Eat Sony's Lunch! 😲

We’ve got some leaked images of the new Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless. Previously there were some hints about what it may look like. In that picture only the hinge area was in frame, but now we see the whole headphones. If this looks familiar to you, well, we’ve seen products from Apple, Bose and Sony, all adopting a similar hingeless design which doesn’t allow you to fold the headphones into a smaller package. That also means a bigger case.

The new Sennheiser appears to be following suit. But even if it doesn’t fold smaller I still think that it’s a much better design than the previous model, the Momentum 3. The M3 could fold smaller, but it also couldn’t fold flat, so if I’m hanging it around my neck it’s pretty suffocating. It also has an all metal headband with sharp edges - God knows how many times I got pinched right by the corners when I’m folding the headphones. It’s also pretty bulky, even when folded flat it takes up a lot of space in my bag. And the case, well, this case right here, it’s really not helping things. Yes, it is an iconic look, I mean, it sounds great too, but to be honest it wasn’t the greatest design.

Sennheiser Momentum 3’s sharp edges.

The new model appears to address some of these issues based on what information we have about it, it also added a few improvements over the M3. The biggest improvement is its battery life. Sennheiser says that it can last up to 60 hours, but this is definitely without noise cancelling turned on. They’ve always taken a sneaky approach when advertising their battery, even I have been duped a couple of times. That’s why for Sennheiser products, I always assume it's rated battery is without noise cancelling. Even so, with noise cancelling, we can probably expect it to last a bit longer than most of the competition. We’re talking Sony, Bose and Apple.

The M4s have got 42mm drivers, that’s a bit larger than the XM5’s 30mm, which is promising. It supports AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive. We also have the price. It’s US$350. Now, that’s not cheap but it’s cheaper than the Sony WH-1000XM5, AirPods Max, more in line with Sony’s older XM4 headphones. Seems like their pricing strategy has changed. It appears that Sennheiser does not want to make the same mistake that they did with previous models. They priced those very high, but they didn’t deliver on the value compared to the competition. So it’ll be interesting to see what it's got based on the price it’s at. Will it support hi-res streaming, will its noise cancelling, microphone pickup, measure up to the competition from Sony, Bose and Apple. All that will be covered when I get them into this studio for review.
